Assistant Farm Manager

SUMMARY

The Assistant Farm Manager is responsible for assisting the Farm Director in the total operation of the farm. The Assistant Farm Manager will assume the duties of the Farm Director in his/her absence as needed.

The Assistant Farm Manager is directly responsible to the Farm Director.

This position is exempt from overtime pay.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and responsibilities are given as examples of the various types of work performed in this position. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Assists in developing plans for a progressive and profitable Farm and Forestry operation.
  2. Helps manage and implement the operation of the Youth Ranches agricultural program relating to livestock and pasture production.
  3. Helps manage and implement the operation of the Youth Ranches agricultural program relating to timber and pine straw production.
  4. Helps manage and implement the operation of the Youth Ranches agricultural program relating to hay and crop production.
  5. Ensures that the Farm grounds, fence, vehicles, equipment, buildings and animals are maintained in an attractive and functional manner.
  6. Helps develop and implement a planned program for youth participation in extracurricular activities, including 4-H, FFA, and horseback activities.
  7. Utilizes routine jobs to teach youth and other staff good agricultural and forestry practices.
  8. Helps plan, build, and repair Farm related buildings, structures, facilities and equipment.
  9. Assists in all other endeavors ruled necessary, including but not limited to: recreation; wildlife management; horticulture and tree transplanting; non-cash pickups; and firefighting and control programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of an Associates of Arts degree in an agricultural or forestry related field, or equivalent trade school education plus practical experience is required. A bachelor’s degree and farm experience are preferred.

  1. Must possess a general knowledge of forestry or agriculture.
  2. Must be willing and able to supervise and work with youth in work, recreation, and extracurricular activities, in a mature and professional manner.
  3. Must have the ability to handle crisis and major problem situations including being able to handle aggressive or acting out behavior is such a way that positive growth takes place.
  4. Must have the ability to work cooperatively with other staff members and the public.
  5. Must have the ability to listen and counsel.
  6. Must be willing and able to operate (or learn to operate) equipment necessary to this job including, but not limited to, farm tractors and equipment and land clearing equipment.
  7. Must have the ability to keep detailed, accurate and meaningful records.
  8. Must have the ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  9. Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups.
  10. Must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts, such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume; ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  11. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to interpret extensive variety of instructions; ability to deal with problems involving variety of situations.
  12. Must have a valid Florida Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel. This employee is occasionally required to sit, talk, or hear, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions for this job may include outdoor weather conditions, working near mechanical moving parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

BASE SALARY               $35,360.00 annually
